How to migrate SafeW chats and settings to a new computer
Got a new computer? This guide walks you through backing up, exporting and restoring your SafeW chats and settings, plus the common pitfalls.
Switching to a new computer? The last thing you want is to lose your chats and settings. Migrating SafeW is easy — just follow "backup > export > restore".
Step 1: Back up on the old computer
Open SafeW, go to "Settings > Data & Storage" and choose "Local backup". The app generates an encrypted backup file — save it to a USB drive, external hard drive or cloud.
Step 2: Export key settings
Besides chats, note down your notification and privacy preferences. Screenshots work well as a reference for re-configuring on the new device, so you don't miss a toggle.
Step 3: Restore on the new computer
Install SafeW on the new computer and log in with the same account. Go to "Data & Storage", choose "Import backup", select the backup file, and wait for the restore to finish.
Step 4: Verify nothing is missing
After restoring, check the key items: contacts, recent chat history, and whether media files open. If something is missing, go back to the old computer and export again.
Common pitfalls
First, don't store the backup on the C: drive — a system reinstall can wipe it. Second, confirm version numbers before importing; a big version gap can break the restore. Third, secret chats never sync to the cloud for security reasons, so handle them separately.
